The Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway has become the most extreme and demanding triathlon in the world. At the same time it\u2019s one of the most stunning and unique events. Let\u2019s find out why.<\/p>\n

The spectacular start of the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon<\/h1>\n

Have you ever thought about starting a triathlon jumping into the cold water of the Norwegian fiords? Well then stop imagining because at the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon<\/a> is possible. Maybe this is not the most unique element of this event, but let\u2019s get real, seeing dozens of athletes jumping into the freezing Norwegian water at sunrise from a ferry is pretty cool.<\/p>\n

The weather in Norway, as you may imagine is not ideal for a triathlon, and despite being August swimming at 5 am in the morning in the Hardangerfjord fiord is not a piece of cake.<\/p>\n

\u201cAwesome\u201d, \u201cstunning\u201d or \u201camazing\u201d are some of the words used by the triathletes at the Norseman Xtreme to describe the bicycle stage. This second stage will take us through the Norwegian mountains, reaching 1200 meters above sea level. During these 180 kilometres, the contestants will have time to admire the beautiful Norwegian nature, surrounded by wild animals.<\/p>\n

Once we leave the bicycle behind, it\u2019s time to start the marathon. Out of the 42 kilometres of this stage, 25 are flat. After this, the triathletes will climb the local mountain, Gaustatoppen, arriving at the finish line at 1880 metres above sea level. However, due to the remote location of the finish line, only the first 160 contestants will make the final 4,7 km to the peak.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, this is not it yet, but Norseman has more surprises. What makes this triathlon more attractive and interesting is not the amazing landscape, or the challenging climate, but the possibility of bringing your friends and family as your own support team. This means that the race is not supported, so the competitors need to have a crew with them<\/strong> to provide them with food and drinks during the race.<\/p>\n

It may sound very difficult, but that may be precisely the real beauty of Norseman Xtreme, to have a unique opportunity to live such a special and impressive race, with your friends and family. Furthermore, to be able to finish the Norseman (and getting the black T-shirt for doing so) surrounded by your loved ones is probably the most important added value that this race offers to all the competitors.<\/p>\n

Norseman Xtreme in numbers<\/h1>\n

Despite meaning \u201cMan from the north\u201d in Norwegian, only 40% of the competitors are from this country. Furthermore, this year, athletes from up to 60 different countries are expected to compete in this triathlon. The male race time record is 10:23:43 for Henrik Oftedal from Norway and 12:17:04 for Annett Finger from Germany for female, both achieved in 2012.<\/p>\n
