{"id":231,"date":"2015-05-13T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T06:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.safesportid.com\/blog\/?p=231"},"modified":"2015-05-13T08:10:30","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T06:10:30","slug":"running-a-marathon-at-the-north-pole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.safesportid.com\/blog\/en\/events\/running-a-marathon-at-the-north-pole\/","title":{"rendered":"Running a Marathon at the North Pole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It might sound crazy but there are only few places in the world where marathonians wouldn\u00b4t run 42,195km and the <strong>North Pole<\/strong> is not one of them.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Summary facts about the Noth Pole Marathon:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The only certified marathon that is run entirely &#8216;on&#8217; water, the frozen water of the Arctic Ocean<\/li>\n<li>Recognized by <strong>Guinness World Records<\/strong> as the northernmost marathon on earth<\/li>\n<li>Dubbed the <strong>&#8216;World&#8217;s Coolest Marathon&#8217;<\/strong> by Runner&#8217;s World magazine in 2004<\/li>\n<li>There have been 12 North Pole Marathons to date<\/li>\n<li>Approximately <strong>350 people from 40 nations<\/strong> have successfully completed the event<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s impossible to predict winning times because weather conditions and terrain are variable from one year to the next<\/li>\n<li>The men&#8217;s record of <strong>3:36:10 was set by Thomas Maguire<\/strong> (IRL) in 2007<\/li>\n<li>The women&#8217;s record of <strong>4:52:45 was set by Anne-Marie Flammersfeld<\/strong> (GER) in 2014<\/li>\n<li>Two guided blind athletes, Mark Pollock and Jamie Cuthbertson, completed the race in 2004 and 2010, respectively<\/li>\n<li>In 2007, William Tan &#8211; a wheelchair competitor &#8211; completed a marathon distance on the aircraft runway<\/li>\n<li>Participants are eligible to join the exclusive <strong>Marathon Grand Slam Club<\/strong> by finishing a marathon on each of the seven continents and the North Pole Marathon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>It all started in 2002<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The first ever North Pole Marathon was a &#8216;solo&#8217; run by <strong>Richard Donovan<\/strong>. Richard won the First Ever South Pole Marathon ten weeks previously and became the <strong>first marathoner at both poles<\/strong> by completing the North Pole Marathon. Following the 2003 North Pole Marathon, the business known as Polar Running Adventures was established by Richard Donovan to operate future marathons at the pole.
